~~NOCACHE~~ ====== Los Angeles Area MiniCons 2002 ======
===== L.A. MINICON REPORT =====
**by Kray, Berkeley CA**
Everyone collects something. I seem to be collecting cities in which I've
attended a local NPL gathering. Until recently I had logged Boston,
New York, San Francisco and Seattle; now I can add the City of Angels,
having been to LA's last two minicons. Here's a rundown of the March
30 festivities.
I arrived at the home of Bartok's parents in La Mirada a bit after noon,
having gotten a ride from LAX from Panache, MOL and Silence (only to
discover that the car contained yet another passenger--congrats!*). Upon
arriving, we were greeted by a smorgasbord of pencil-and-paper puzzles by
Bartok, Elfman, Kegler, Tablesaw et al. After schmoozing/solving for a
while, we began the scheduled program around 1 PM. Game presenters
included Bluff, Panache, Music Man, Artistry, and Bartok. The latter two
presented games that may be familiar from conventions: Body Language
(presented as an after-hours game by T McAy in SF and Newark: a
combination of charades and guessing answers to partially obscured
questions) and Chain Reaction (two players take turns saying one word each
to form a grammatically correct clue for a third teammate). We also
engaged in a bit of what they call "Improv Flats" (also known as
"Performance Flats"): improvised skits that clue parts of a base.
Somewhere in there we wedged in a terrific potluck dinner; even this
vegetarian left full. There was also a "business meeting", which mainly
concerned plans for a Los Angeles bid for the 2004 convention; watch for
that at the ConCouver business meeting. Although the official party broke
up at around 9 PM, a few of us stayed on for some after hours gaming,
including Twitch, Chrononauts, and the guessing games French Toast and
Spanish Omelet.
* Just to clarify, MoL and Silence (who is the daughter
of Panache and Manache) are expecting their first child. Her NPL-nom is,
of course, Granache.
