Brillig

Recruitment

I joined because of the article in Games in 1989 or so and have never been able to convince anyone else to join. They are always stalled by the concept of flats.

[The article was eventually identified as appearing in the “Pencilwise” section of the Oct/Nov issue of Games.]

First Issue: Sep 1989

In the eighth or ninth grade we were given the assignment to memorize a poem and recite it in front of the class. Other students chose inspirational or heavy-duty stuff, but not me–I memorized “Jabberwocky.” Which I recited to the class with great expressionism and theatrics.

<quote> And as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! You can imagine. </quote>

When I finished there was an absolute silence. Oh, well, I thought, I tried. Then came this thunderous applause! So the poem has always signified a kind of success to me. And when I told Sibyl about my choice, she thought it had a certain air–“Who wrote that flat?” ”'Twas Brillig.” I've heard that other subscribing members have asked for Brillig as a nom and were disappointed it was already chosen.

This is running on at the mouth (or keyboard), but I remember at my first convention I was astonished that people actually addressed me by this word and expected me to answer. I had to learn to come when called, like a puppy.
