Kea

Recruitment

It was at a Listener Crossword setters' dinner in Leeds, I think. During preprandial milling-about Arepo took me aside, made me test-solve one of his crosswords, and then showed me this grubby little organ full of cabalistic symbols and usages.

Nom

I'm from New Zealand myself, so when I started setting Listener crosswords, I wanted something antipodean for my pseudonym. Chambers' definition (until 1988) of KEA was “a New Zealand parrot which sometimes kills sheep”. I thought this was admirable, and appropriate, in the sense that I felt I was copying the efforts of the masters, but I hoped that my puzzles might catch the unwary by surprise.
