I met Arachne in 1982 at the First U.S. Open X - word Championship at NYU (this is also where I first met everybody else: WILLz, Famulus, Senor, Double-H, En. et alii). And she was the first to mention the NPL to me; I'm not sure if she was already a member or was about to be one. She had Mangie send a mini-sample but I didn't join until 1987 when Bookworm sent in a gift sub for me so I could help him solve.
