I was recruited by etc., whom I knew from musical-theater circles in college. After graduation, I started reading/solving GAMES Magazine avidly, found that she wrote for it and sent a note mentioning I'd noticed her byline (thus outing myself as a puzzler). A year or so after I moved back to the Boston area, she told me a bit about the NPL and invited me to a party where she handed me a copy of the Enigma Minisample and introduced me to Eric, who walked me through a few flat types. I left sold on the idea and joined a few weeks later.
