Lilith

Recruitment

I had met WILLz over a period of years at the Mohonk Wonderful World of Words weekends. After the Washington, DC, convention, an article appeared in the local newspaper, and my sister, who lives in the DC area, sent it to me. I contacted WILLz for more information, he sent me The Enigma sampler, and that's the last thing I remember.

Recruits

Nom

The nom Lilith is based, not on the character in “Cheers,” but on a midrash. According to Jewish legend, Lilith was Adam's first wife, before Eve. (There are actually two stories of creation in Genesis.) Lilith refused to be subservient to Adam and, after uttering the ineffable name of God, she flew away. For centuries, she was considered to be a she-devil. In recent decades, however, she has been embraced by Jewish feminists; she is considered a symbol of independence and equality for those fighting for ritual egalitarianism in the synagogue, a struggle in which I was very much involved in the 1980s. When I needed to find a nom for NPL, Lilith was the first name that came to mind. When I realized that it consisted of the first two letters of my first name and the last two letters of my last name, I knew it was meant to be.
