The most interesting case of nom-changing I ever heard of was by a member in the early 80's whose name was Vernon Jones. I think he was Verj first, then moved and became Brooklyn Brink, but finally settled on Knotsmith, in my opinion a brilliant nom for a puzzlemaker whose name is Jones. (A brainy competitor, too).
