Surprisingly enough, I've not heard anyone else mention that they first heard of the NPL through Tough Cryptics. In the pub's second year, there was a rather short “article” mentioning the League, which highlighted the fact that the monthly publication contained approximately 100 unique puzzles each month (highlighted it so much, in fact, that I thought “membership” pretty much consisted of nothing more than a subscription to a neat puzzle mag). For $11 dollars a year, I figured I couldn't lose, and immediately sent off a subscription request. My “starter kit” arrived not long after, followed the day afterwards by my first official welcome letter - from Mel Rosen! - you could have knocked me over with a feather. “Just a subscription”, indeed!
